Axon
An axon is an extension of the neuron (nerve cell) that connects the neuron to its target, such as a muscle.
Axonotmesis
An axonometric injury (axonotmesis) cuts off the neuron (nerve cell) from its target, but the nerve remains in continuity. The part of the axon that remains connected to the neuron remains alive. The part of the axon that is disconnected from the neuron dies back in a process known as Wallerian Degeneration. Recovery of function after an axonotmesis requires growth of the injured axon from the point it was injured, down the remaining nerve structure, and to the target organ, such as a muscle. Regrowth of the axon occurs at a rate of 1mm per day, or about 1 inch a month.
